The Department was established in 1963. The founder and the first Head of the Department was Vasili Grigoryevich Konarev, Member of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Honoured Scientist of the Republic of Bashkortostan. One of the leading scientists of the country in the sphere of biochemistry, molecular biology, plant genetics. An author of textbooks and monographs in biochemistry and molecular genetics of cultivated plants.
The outstanding biochemist Radik Rakhimyanovich Akhmetov, Doctor of Biology, Professor made a great contribution to the development of the Department.
Departmental disciplines: Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Genetics, Biophysics, Molecular Foundations of Plant Immunity, Microorganism Ecology, Contemporary Biological Issues, Information Technologies.
Main areas of research: biochemical and molecular-genetic mechanisms of agricultural plants homeostasis; developing biological preparation for use in oily soils recultivation. The Department has material facilities enabling it to carry out research and train professionals on the modern level.
International relations result in publishing research results in foreign scientific journals, in exchanging publications, in participating in international congresses and symposiums.
Scientists from the Institute of Biochemistry and Genetics, from the Institute of Biology of the Ufa Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, from the Immunopreparat state unitary enterprise take an active part in training Department graduates. A number of students write their diploma papers in laboratories of the Ufa and Pushchino Science Centres of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Department runs postgraduate courses, individual Department graduates continue their scientific activities in other universities and scientific institutions in Russia and abroad.
The Department has trained more than 800 specialists in biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, genetics. More than 70 graduates have become Candidates of Sciences and 16 graduates are Doctors of Sciences now. The Department has contributed greatly to the creation of a scientific school of biochemists, molecular biologists, biotechnologists, including those in the sphere of cell and genetic engineering, in the Republic of Bashkortostan.
